The holiday season can mean mixed emotions for many people. For some, it brings excitement, enthusiasm, and anticipation. For others, it’s a stressful and demanding time filled with parties, shopping, and entertaining. The season may also bring up feelings of sadness for those who have lost loved ones or experienced other emotional trauma.

However, there are strategies to help everyone enjoy this time of year. Here are a few tips to keep the “happy” in your holidays.

Keep your routine as regular as possible.

Too much change in your routine can lead to stress. Try not to deviate too much from your regular schedule. Plan ahead; set aside specific days for shopping, baking, and other holiday traditions. Learn to say no when the schedule becomes too hectic.

Have realistic expectations.

Trying to create an idealized version of the holidays is a recipe for stress and disappointment. Instead, embrace what you have, and do away with false expectations. As families and friendships change and grow, traditions may do the same.

Maintain healthy habits.

Get plenty of sleep and physical activity. Set aside time for yourself, even if it’s just a brief break each day to recharge. The holidays are often a time for indulgence, but don’t let it become a free-for-all. Try to choose healthy snacks so you don’t go overboard on treats.

Reach Out.

If you feel lonely or isolated, consider participating in community, religious or social events. Volunteer opportunities can also bring companionship and joy.

Learn more.
