In the 90s, I became a host of Planet X, a sports lifestyle show featuring extreme adaptive and non-adaptive sports. As host, I was able to try so many sports – jet-skiing, go-cart racing, even hockey.

Video transcript:

ANDY HOUGHTON: Have you ever heard of wheelchair hockey? Well, you’re about to find out exactly what it is.

Hey, we’re here at the Anaheim Pond and I’m here with Carlos of Disney Goals. He’s going to tell us a little bit about what Disney Goals is.

CARLOS: Disney Goal is ice hockey, roller hockey, helping out people with community service, and learning in the classroom.

ANDY HOUGHTON: Sounds like a good program to me.

ANNOUNCER: Five, four, three, two, one.

ANDY HOUGHTON: I had to come out and do some bicycle riding because the boys wouldn’t let me play rugby with them.

Do, do, do, do. Do, do, do, do.

I’m here with Janine Duncan at the Gold’s Gym in Huntington Beach. So, what kind of machines? Where are we going to go today?

JANINE DUNCAN: We’re going to start off with shoulders, work your back, and then we’re going to work your chest out.

ANDY HOUGHTON: It’s important to remember that not everybody’s physical limitations are going to allow them to work out in this gym as I am. So, everybody knows what their abilities are and they are able to test those. However, there is always something at a gym or facility that you’re going to be able to use to work out. And if not, there are methods that you can use and learn and physical therapists, how to work out properly.

Let me see what you got. Man. That is rock. This kid is rock. He’s got some potential.

Wheelchair hockey. It’s fun, it’s pain, it’s hard hitting, it’s passing, it’s growing. It’s an exciting sport.

ANNOUNCER: Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the Casa Colina Allstars versus the Mighty Dirtbags.

ANDY HOUGHTON: Here it is, the time we’ve all been waiting for, the big game. Let’s get it on.

SPEAKER: Dirtbags in the house, baby.

ANNOUNCER: There is one net remaining the game. Let’s run them home.

ANDY HOUGHTON: I played the worst game of my life. Caused a goal. I feel like an idiot, man. In front of the crowd. It was my moment. I just want to cry right now.

Doug the crazy man. Doug, what was the game like?

DOUG: I tell you what, we get out there. There are 20,000 to 30,000 screaming fans all cheering for us out there. The heart is pumping. The adrenaline is racing. You go out there and you hit somebody, nothing like it, baby. Nothing like it.

ANDY HOUGHTON: This is Joey. He is the catalyst of this evening. Tell us what’s it like to play in front of fans?

JOEY: I tell you what, it was a great crowd out there tonight. Doug said 20,000. Maybe more like about five but it was still – it was a great feeling. It’s good to get out there and blow it out a little, you know, have people cheering for you. It’s a good feeling.

ANDY HOUGHTON: We’ll see you from the Anaheim Pond.
